For this project I had several challenges but also many successes. One particular challenge for me was to find information online about this particular subject. It was tough to research about how the beauty standard in America has changed over time and how people feel about it. Throughout the conducting of my research, I found that it was really hard to find the specific information that I was looking for, as previously mentioned, however I just decided to conduct my own research. Here are the series of questions that I asked in my polls.
In your opinion what is the beauty standard
Do you think you fit the beauty standards of today's society
What influences do you think social media has on your view of beauty standards along with others
Does social media affect your view of yourself physically and or mentally
How have beauty standards affected you personally?
How do you feel like you're seen to the opposite sex
How have you felt the need to conform to certain beauty standards
Have you refrained from talking to someone because you feel you did not fit the beauty standard
Do beauty standards matter
Even though beauty standards may or may not matter to you, do you think it matters to other people and affects their judgement on you?
Do you feel more comfortable with or without makeup
Are you confident about your body
Have your friends influence your opinion on the beauty standard
The results that I acquired from these questions actually really helped me a lot to come to valuable conclusions. I had hypothesized that social media, environment, etc. really affect how a person views themselves and others. Personally, I think that everyone is beautiful in their own way and should not judge themselves or others based on what they see online, or what they are being told is beautiful. In my polls it was sad to see so many beautiful people admit how unconfident they are in themselves and of their bodies because they do not believe that they “fit” a certain beauty standard. We all know that loving yourself for who you are cannot be taught and it really sucks that social media, friends, environment, etc. affect people in all these negative kinds of ways. It was so sad to me to have to conduct these polls and learn the information I read online because people are not confident in themselves over an invisible image of what is deemed to be beautiful to other people. I am really happy with how the research came out though, and I would love to continue to do some more research on this topic. It may seem like a taboo subject and people do not really like to talk about it, but I think that the more people open up about this subject, the more we can fix this problem.
